Members begin joining online
Virginia Farm Bureau’s first new member to join through SaveOurFood.org said she learned about the organization on a public broadcast channel in Arlington.
She immediately visited this site and joined the Farm Bureau online.
“The older I get, the more I want to take care of and promote our natural resources,” Sharon Walker said.
Farm Bureau’s support of farmers who provide safe, fresh, locally grown food ties into her beliefs.
“Most adults and children don’t have a clue what a tomato or watermelon really tastes like, and that’s pretty sad,” Walker said. “Some of my best memories are of fresh tomatoes straight from the garden, corn right off the stalk and watermelons opened and consumed right in the garden.”
Through its Save Our Food campaign, Farm Bureau is sharing information on the nutritional and economic benefits of eating locally grown foods and encouraging consumers to join in its support of farmers.
Walker currently works for the military, but she has purchased 12 acres in Appomattox County and said she intends to become an “authentic” farmer one day.
“So I wanted to become a card-carrying Farm Bureau Save Our Food member.”
